Distance swimmer and out lesbian Diana Nyad has launched a fundraising page to help support her in her Xtreme Dream as she attempts to swim from Cuba to Florida. Nyad, 63, said in a tweet, yesterday, “I could never fulfill the Xtreme Dream without you guys. Want to donate, and support the dream? Click the link. Thanks!”

Nyad, the greatest long distance swimmer in the world from 1969 until 1979, attempted to swim 100 miles from Cuba to Florida at the peak of her career, according to her website, but came up short of her goal due to strong currents and bad weather after being in the water for 41 hours and 49 minutes.

After 31 years without swimming, last year, Nyad decided to try completing the Cuba to Florida swim she had failed years before. She’s been training ever since.

An exact date for the swim this summer hasn’t been set, yet. However, Nyad has been training hard and documenting the experience on her website.

“It takes experience and confidence to manage your energy, to capture the results of all your hard work, and to bring all the factors your sport requires together on the day you’re going to ask your body to perform at its peak,” she said in a recent blog post.

Best of luck to Nyad! May the current be with you.
