We already knew we were excited for Waitress, a new musical based on the 2007 motion picture written by Adrienne Shelley, to hit Broadway this spring. With music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles and a successful run at the American Reperatory Theater in Cambridge last year under its belt, there are high hopes that this could be a truly magical production. However, Waitress news got even more awesome this week when it was announced that choreographer Lorin Latarro would be joining the creative team that includes Bareilles, book writer Jessie Nelson, and director Diane Paulus, making this the first-ever Broadway musical in history with a creative team entirely comprised of women. Paulus said in a press release, "I’m thrilled that Waitress is breaking boundaries as the first Broadway musical with book, score, choreography and direction by a team of women. It’s a historic and long overdue moment for Broadway, and I’m honored to be working alongside such passionate and inspiring women."
Waitress tells the story of Jenna, a waitress and pie maker stuck in a loveless marriage and facing an unexpected pregnancy. Though she fears she'll have to abandon her dream of opening her own pie shop, a pie contest and a handsome newcomer lead her on a different path. Jenna will be played by Broadway veteran Jessie Mueller, leading a cast that includes Eric Anderson, Christopher Fitzgerald, Drew Gehling, and Orange is the New Black's Kimiko Glenn. Sara Bareilles has already realeased her own video for a song from the show, the hauntingly beautiful "She Used to Be Mine," and you can watch it right here:
Waitress opens on April 24th, 2016 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, with previews starting March 25th. For more information and tickets visit waitressthemusical.com.
