Last night, Ellen DeGeneres won "Choice Comedian" at the Teen Choice Awards. It's an easy awards show to forget about completely (do we really need to spend a few hours celebrating in the choices of teens? What the hell do the winners do with those giant surf boards?), but this moment from last night's ceremony really did prove to be pretty worthwhile. When Ellen won "Choice Comedian," she did certainly take a comical moment to acknowlege the laid back attitude of the ceremony, but then things took a more emotional turn. Ellen shared with the audience:
"I wanna say also it feels good to be chosen, but there was a time in my life that I was not chosen. I was the opposite of chosen because I was different, and I think I wanna make sure that everyone knows that what makes you different right now, makes you stand out later in life. So you should be proud of being different, proud of who you are."
We couldn't agree more! It also turns out that yesterday was Ellen's 7-year wedding anniversary with Portia, who was there to support her on that special, surfboard-y night. Thank you for the beautiful words, Ellen! The teens definitely got it right this time.
