As a site that features entertainment and news geared toward the lesbian community at large we are committed to highlighting artists, musicians and craftspeople in the community. This week we'd like to introduce you to Ladysoal, a talented group of musicians that came together through a shared passion of music. Ladysoal, hails from Ames, Iowa, and is comprised of four members -- Sharika, Mike, Mallory, and Justin.
According to Ladysoal’s bio Sharika was surround by music from a very young age. She played anything her parents put in front of her. After discovering her passion for playing the guitar and singing she moved to Los Angeles, CA to pursue her dreams. After deciding that being a background singer was not enough, Sharika, who is is bisexual, moved back to Iowa to venture out on her own.
Mike met Sharika by chance through friends, after Sharika had returned to Iowa, and the two discovered their interest in playing together. Sharika asked Mike to fill in one night for her guitar player and he has been a part of Ladysoal ever since.
Mallory made the decision to play the bass guitar at 13 and has been teaching herself ever since. On a chance meeting at a party Mallory met Sharika and join Ladysoal.
Justin, the beat man, knew from an early age that drumming was what he wanted to do. As a result, he enrolled in Iowa State’s music program, perfecting his talent and met Sharika and Ladysoal when they were looking for a summer drummer. Justin was a perfect fit with Ladysoal and so they kept him, and he is now a permanent member.
In order to show their support for the LGBT community, Ladysoal recently produced a video named, “That Girl”. The video expresses the importance of accepting your sexuality no matter that might be. In the video the band members are dressed in ways that express their personality and individuality. Sharika talks about why they decided to make the video, “I wanted the video to be a comfort to anyone and everyone out there that has a dream, but is struggling with their sexuality, to feel like yes you can have a dream and be OK with your sexuality.”
