SheWired's Fall TV Preview: Hellcats, The Event, Nikita, Glee and more...

Here's SheWired's round-up of fall TV shows for the lesbian-leaning girl. Look forward to a lesbian cheerleader on Hellcats, tough girl kicking ass on Nikita, mystery shrouded in obfuscation in The Event, The L Word stars Rose Rollins, Laurel Holloman and Jennifer Beals all back on the small screen, Glee's Jane Lynch as Sue Sylvester torturing the glee club, Lea Michele's Rachel Berry as diva-like as ever and much more!

It’s time to wave goodbye to your TV summer favorites, but never fear, a fresh crop of old and new programs is on its way. If you, like me, are a regular on entertainment blogs, you’ve probably had a hard time avoiding the hundreds of spoilers for several upcoming shows, but others remain shrouded in mystery. Take The Event, for example. I wish I could tell you a shred of what it’s about, but this new NBC show premiering September 20th has dedicated all of its advertising to deliberately informing the public of what the titular “Event” is not. All we know is that it’s been compared to Lost, is starring ER’s Laura Innes and the always pleasant Sarah Roemer, and has one amazingly engaging if not completely annoying advertising technique worth tuning in for.

Another buzz worthy newbie is ABC’s No Ordinary Family, which follows an “ordinary family” who, after a plane crash finds that they have superpowers. Don’t worry, this is no Heroes. In fact, the 3 minute promo seems to offer a unique show with a great cast and a promising premise. It’s always nice to see Dexter’s Julie Benz back on screen as well, and she’s sure to be nothing short of fierce as the mom of the superclan.

It’s not just superheroes who will be kick ass this television season, however. The CW’s Nikita promises action, not to mention a dangerous dose of drama, starting September 9th. The show revolves around Nikita, an ex-assassin who is now being hunted by the CIA. The killer main role is in the very capable hands of Maggie Q, who is no stranger to the action scene and even performs her own stunts on the show.

This is the fourth incarnation of Luc Besson’s 1990 run-away hit La Femme Nikita. That success was followed up with the compulsory American remake Point of No Return, which starred Bridget Fonda. And the there was the 1997 TV series La Femme Nikita, which ran on USA for five seasons.

For an entirely different change of pace, the CW is also premiering Hellcats, which is looking to be one of the networks most fun guilty pleasures. Former Disney staple Alyson Michalka stars as Marti, a punky college student on track to become a lawyer until her scholarship is denied. The only way to maintain her money is to join the cheerleading squad, which is headed by Savannah, better known as fellow Disney regular Ashley Tisdale. For an extra treat Elena Esovolova will play a lesbian cheerleader nicknamed The Wedge. Hellcats will certainly not be deep, quality television, but if the show’s as amusing as its 6 minute preview, I’m in.

A couple more highlights to finish out the new fall season include NBC’s Undercovers about husband/wife CIA agents and CBS’s Hawaii Five-0 reboot. Fun fact?

Hawaii Five-0’s Grace Park will be playing the role of Kona Kalakaua, a detective who, in the original, was named Kono and played by a man. For that, I say Grace Park wins this season’s Girl Power award, and makes this remake just that much more watchable.

There are still plenty of returning shows to look forward to. FOX’s Glee has listened to its audience and bumped Heather Morris, who plays the brilliantly baffling Brittany, up to series regular, and has even promised a Brittany Spears themed episode around Heather’s beloved character. As for the a possible Santana/Brittany romance? We’ll have to wait to hear more on that, but it’s been reported that Chris Colfer’s Kurt will find a football playing boyfriend this season.

The CW’s 90120 is also hinting at another same-sex romance, and hopefully this time it won’t be as short-lived and out of place as last season’s. Instead, one of the male characters will be coming out of the closet, which is sure to provide some SoCal drama.

On another CW note, The Vampire Diaries promos continue to prove to the world that Twilight could have been this awesome as superevil vampire Katherine returns to Mystic Falls to stir up some trouble. The best part? The addition of Katherine’s character means that Nina Dobrev now has two roles to play, which means double the screen time. Emmy nomination, anyone?

A few former L Word stars have landed roles on the small screen this fall. Look for Rose Rollins, who played soldier Tasha on the L Word, in Chase, where she’ll play a tough-as-nails U.S. Marshall. Laurel Holloman, who played Tina Kennard, one half of the most famous fictional lesbian couple on television, costars in the Angela Robinson (D.E.B.S) helmed Gigantic, about kids growing up with celebrity parents.

Laurel plays a single mom in the show that stars Meryl Streep’s daughter Grace Gummer and Joe Mantegna’s daughter Gia Mantegna. Gigantic is set to air Oct. 8, on TeenNick. Finally, Jennifer Beals, who embodied Bette Porter for six seasons, returns as Asst. U.S. Attorney Zoe Landau on Fox’s Lie to Me. It looks like Jennifer is just destined to wear a power suit!

Unfortunately, with all these new shows coming in, some old favorites had to say goodbye. But while Law and Order may have been cancelled, Law and Order: Los Angeles will be premiering on September 29th. However, my personal favorite crime-fighting gang is the fine folks on Fringe, who will be teaming up for a third season on September 23rd. 30 Rock, How I Met Your Mother, and Modern Family will be back to provide some comic relief in between the big dramas, as will The Office, Cougar Town, and Big Bang Theory. So even though True Blood and Mad Men may be reaching their final moments, there is still plenty of programming coming up that’s sure to keep you and your DVR very busy.
