In much of Western history, being LGBT has not exactly squared with religion. This was clear enough in the Middle Ages, when heretics and homosexuals shared the same fate at the same burning stake. But even today, many religions promote negative stereotypes about LGBT people, and may even promote violence against them. However, there is a silver lining: as LGBT people become more and more free to come out, their communities of faith have started to accept them. Today there are out and proud gay Muslims, Christians, Jews, and more, unifying queerness and faith under a universal message of love.
