Gay activists in North Carolina delivered hundreds of empty Froot Loops cereal boxes to state representative Larry Brown on Thursday to protest his recent references to gays as “queers” and “fruitloops.”
According to the Winston-Salem Journal, the activists delivered 279 Froot Loops miniboxes to Brown at the statehouse.
“Each box had a message for Brown pasted on the back,” reported the Journal. “Brown, a Republican who represents the 73rd District, made news across the country in recent weeks for an e-mail that he sent fellow GOP legislators.”
In an e-mail to his Republican colleagues, Brown had mocked house speaker Joe Hackney, a Democrat, for receiving an award from Equality North Carolina at one of the gay rights group’s events.
“I hope all the queers are thrilled to see him,” wrote Brown. “I am sure there will be a couple legislative fruitloops there in the audience.”
Brown was not at his office to receive the delivery, an action that raised $8,500 for Equality North Carolina, with donations coming in to pay for the cereal and further fund the group’s work.
