5 Things I Want to See From Avatar Studios
More Avatar content is coming our way soon! And we have so many hopes and desires!
Nickelodeon just recently announced the launch of Avatar Studios, with masterminds Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko leading the charge! That means more animated film and televison content from the Avatar: The Last Airbender universe is going to be made, and while there are so many new and original projects that can become of this, as a longtime Avatar and Korra fan, the news of the new studio's launch got me thinking about what exactly I wanted to see!
So here are some cool, and queer AF, Avatar projects I would absolutely LOVE to see come to fruition!
An Azula redemption arc
Zuko's journey from a disgraced Fire Nation prince bent on regaining his honor to a full-fledged member of Team Avatar and one of Aang's most powerful and loyal friends is hailed as one of the greatest character arcs in TV history. If Zuko can be afforded a great, epic hero's redemption, I don't see why his sister Azula can't! Although she did make being evil look so freakin' cool, it would be nice to see (on-screen), what became of her, and how she coped with the loss of not being able to follow in her father, Fire Lord Ozai's, footsteps — her entire life's work up until the end of the original Avatar: The Last Airbender series.
The grown-up adventures of the original Team Avatar
I know the Avatar comics explore what happens to the Aang Gang in the years after the original ATLA series and before The Legend of Korra, but there are literally decades and decades of stories that can be told from this rag-tag bunch of benders alone! And it doesn't have to all be about the complex geopolitics of the Four Nations!
I want to see what Team Avatar was like in their 20s! Were they messy AF? How did their relationships with each other pan out? Did they date around? How often did they fight? Did they fall in love??? A coming-of-age style Avatar project is something that lives in my mind rent-free and something I know would be an absolute joy to watch!
A film or series dedicated to bisexual icon Avatar Kyoshi
If you thought Korra was the only queer Avatar, think again! Avatar Kyoshi is also a member of the LGBTQ+ family!
In 2018, one of the Korra sequel comics — Dark Horse's The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars – Part One — confirmed that Kyoshi loved both men and women during her lifetime, making her the badass, tall AF bisexual icon that the Avatar universe so desperately needs! Though she did get her own novel series, it would be SO COOL to see her get her own dedicated film or TV series to showcase her life and story!!
An on-screen Korrasami kiss
Don't get me wrong, Korra and Asami being confirmed queer and in love with each other during the finale of The Legend of Korra was a groundbreaking moment for animation and paved the way for so many other beloved LGBTQ-inclusive cartoon series we know and love today, but it was literally still the last minute of the last episode of the show.
Now that queerness in mainstream cartoons isn't as taboo as it was back in 2014 when the TLOK finale aired, queer Avatar fans definitely deserve to see more of how Korra and Asami's romance blossomed throughout their lives! And their epic first kiss that happened in comic form deserves to be shown on-screen!
More Nuktuk
This one is a little more self-indulgent than the others, but The Legend of Korra's Bolin (a.k.a. the ultimate loveable himbo of all himbos) dressing up as fictional movie character Nuktuk: Hero of the South is campy and swoon-worthy as hell, and the gays deserve to see more of their furry, shirtless boyfriend on more than just a few occasions!
What kinds of projects do you want to see coming out of Avatar Studios?
The possibilities are endless, and we can't wait to see what's in store for the future of the Avatar universe!
