1) The Price of Salt, Claire Morgan (Patricia Highsmith), 1953
It’s hard to believe one of the best lesbian literary romances of all time was hidden behind this gaudy 1953 Bantam Books paperback edition. The Price of Salt (later published under the title and adapted to film as Carol) by Patricia Highsmith was first published in 1952 under the pseudonym Claire Morgan. The ending of the novel completely defied literary convention at the time, giving the main characters a chance at happiness. The book has clearly stood the test of time.
