This 2004 Christmas Movie Actually Had Gay Dads in Canadian Release
Have you ever watched a movie and thought, gee, it would sure be great if two of these characters were gay instead of everyone being a bunch of heterosexuals?
Of course you have.
Well, most movies don’t have a secret second version that features gays instead of straights, but, um, turns out one TV Christmas movie from our childhood totally does.
A Very Cool Christmas was the 2004 American title for a movie about a teen girl who decides to give Santa a makeover, and in the process, discovers the true meaning of Christmas. It stars Animorphs’ Brooke Nevin as Lindsay, with Barclay Hope and Ingrid Torrance as her parents.
Except that’s only in America. For the Canadian version, called Too Cool for Christmas, Lindsay’s parents are played by Barclay Hope and Adam Harrington.
While this movie has obviously been around for awhile, the internet has given us the opportunity to collectively discover (and rediscover) things every few years, and this seems to be the time for Canada’s gay dads vs America’s hetero husband to be outed.
A user on Twitter shared the info, alongside two competing clips showcasing different versions of the same scene featuring Lindsay’s folks.

According to IMDb, “other than the gender of the actor that plays the other parent, the two versions of the film are virtually identical with identical lines being delivered by both the actor and the actress and the exact same camera shots being used for their scenes in both versions as if the two versions of the film were shot at the same time, one for the more tolerant Canadian audience and the other one for the presumably more conservative US audience at the time.”
Twitter is basically losing over the fact that the people who made this movie had to literally replace the gays so that the straights wouldn’t have a Christmas meltdown.
“Wild!

There's two versions of this movie.

One where the main character's parents are two gay men. Another where her parents are a heterosexual couple.

Like my parents, Canadians got the gay one. 🏳️‍🌈🇨🇦”— Mike Morrison 🏳️‍🌈 (@Mike Morrison 🏳️‍🌈) 1573536059
“@trrvvb @meakoopa Shoulda made a third version with Ingrid Torrance that replaced Barclay Hope with a woman”— trevb (@trevb) 1573443488

“Fascinating. And since one version is on Hulu and the other on Prime you can open two windows and play both at the same time. I know because I just did...”— David F. Sandberg (@David F. Sandberg) 1573508320
Brb, combing through every movie ever to see if there's a secret "Canadian" version.
Rachel Kiley is presumably a writer and definitely not a terminator. She can usually be found crying over queerbaiting in the Pitch Perfect franchise or on Twitter, if not both.
