Despite a nationwide tolerance campaign by Mexican officials, murder rates within the gay and lesbian community are on the rise, the Associated Press is reporting.
According to a report compiled by a coalition of civic groups, from 1995-2000 there were 30 killings a year motivated by hate. In comparison, the rates doubled from 2001-2009, seeing as many as 60 homicides a year.
Despite a government sponsored public service campaign aimed at promoting tolerance. And despite same sex marriage and adoption becoming legal in Mexico City, violence is increasing at an alarming rate. The report also concluded that Mexico City had the most hate fueled homicides, reporting 144 between 1995 and 2009.
