Due to popular demand Macha Theater in West Hollywood will extend its 10th Anniversary production of Odalys Nanin’s Garbo’s Cuban Lover, about screenwriter, playwright, poet and costume designer and lover to many women of the time, Mercedes De Acosta.
Out playwright and actress Nanin portrays de Acosta, a woman who lived from 1893-1968 and had affairs with glitterati of the time including but not limited to Edith Wharton, Pola Negri, Tallulah Bankhead, Isadora Duncan, Marlene Dietrich and her one true love Greta Garbo.
When Garbo’s Cuban Lover first played in 2001 it was a critical triumph that landed on The Advocate’s list of Ten Best Plays.
While de Acosta certainly had many stories to tell in her long life Nanin’s play hones in her relationships with Garbo and Dietrich and the personal rivalry it spawned.
Nanin’s often lesbian-themed works include Skin of Honey, Beyond Love and The Adventures of the Lieutenant Nun, to name a few.
Laura Butler and Nanin direct the anniversary production of Garbo’s Cuban Lover, which runs through Nov. 20.
