Calling all fans of extreme sports, athletes and the average people who take up the challenge, the documentary Hood to Coast that chronicles what’s been deemed ‘The Mother of All Relays,” a 197-mile relay race from Mt. Hood to the Oregon coast, is getting a theatrical run at Brooklyn's IndieScreen Theater and running through July 21.
Among the wonderfully driven – or downright insane for signing on– people who are featured in the film is Rachel Larsen, an out lesbian whose signed on as part of the Rookie team that eschews training at all cost – at that’s how it looks in the trailer. Rachel was a non-runner who took on the massive challenge and she embodies everything inspiring about deciding to jump blindly into a new experience. No matter the gender, age or politics of the audience, everyone can find something to relate to or to find inspiring in Rachel's story.
Here’s the official synopsis for the film directed by Christoph Baaden and Marcie Hume:
Hood To Coast follows four unlikely teams on their epic journey to conquer the world's largest relay race. Each year 1000 teams (12,000 runners) in 2000 vans cover 197 grueling miles as a relay team, putting themselves through an arduous physical journey that as an individual would be impossible. Some run to test their personal limits, some to overcome personal obstacles, and others leap in blindly looking for a way to shake up a complacent life. As we follow these four teams, we realize that winning isn't everything in a documentary that takes a celebratory look at personal motivation and attempting the extraordinary.
