It was only a matter of time before the X-Men returned to the big screen, but it looks as though Marvel is gearing up to make that dream a reality.

Deadlinereports that Marvel Studios is officially on the hunt for a writer to helm what will presumably be their first live-action project centered around the popular mutant heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The news comes directly on the heels of the writers’ strike seemingly coming to a close after nearly five months—although official ratification of the new contract has yet to take place.

X-Men coming to Marvel is a big deal, both for fans and for the studio. Despite it being a Marvel comics property, the MCU previously had to take care not to explicitly bring these mutants into the world, or even mention them, as 20th Century Fox had the rights to the live action films. After finding success with the original run of X-Men films in the aughts, and watching the rebooted franchise peter out with films like Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants, Fox was acquired by Disney in 2019, bringing the X-Men and the rest of Marvel (minus Spider-Man) back under the same umbrella.

Several subsequent MCU projects, including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Ms. Marvel, have made it clear that mutants will finally be added to the world, leaving fans hyped and eagerly awaiting further news.

While Marvel going on the hunt for a screenwriter means they’re still in very early stages of developing a proper X-Men reboot, it at least means they’re getting the ball rolling. Let the rumors of what’s to come commence!

Rachel Kiley is presumably a writer and definitely not a terminator. She can usually be found crying over queerbaiting in the Pitch Perfect franchise or on Twitter, if not both.
