At 56, Jennifer Figge became the first woman on record to swim across the Atlantic Ocean, swimming from Cape Verde Islands off Africa's western coast and touching dry land in Trinidad.

Figge, who resides in Aspen, Colorado, left Africa on Jan. 12 with the intention of swimming to the Bahamas, but landed in Trinidad  on Feb. 5 when inclement weather forced her to change direction, the Associated Press reported.

A life-long dream of Figge's to swim the Atlantic Ocean, she'll continue stroking her way through the world's waters with a plan to swim from Trinidad to the British Virgin Islands, where she hopes to touch land in late February, according to the AP.

While fulfilling her dream, Figge wants to get back to her Alaskan Malamute, she told the AP.

"My dog doesn't know where I am. It's time for me to get back home to Hank."
