The Stratton VA Medical Center's decision to hang a gay pride flag in honor of Pride month and to honor the 40th anniversary of the founding of the region's Gay and Lesbian Community Center has led to complaints, the Albany Times Union is reporting.
The rainbow flag is currently being hung outside the facility's fourth floor, separated from its main flag pole but its mere existence is not going over well with some veterans.
"I have a problem with posting a flag on a Federal building that has nothing to do with the Federal government," one concerned vet said. "It doesn't even represent gay veterans. You're at a VA hospital, represent the veterans."
Most vets who are opposed are claiming that law forbids display of banners other than the American and MIA-POW flags on Federal buildings. But local attorneys are claiming that no such restriction exists.
The VA has flown flags for the American Cancer Society and other health causes in the same spot in the past, Stratton spokesman Joe Trusso said.
There is no plan to remove the Pride flag at this time.
