Juno star Ellen Page has attached herself to an adaptation of the 2007 Oscar-winning documentary Freeheld, in which a dying woman struggles to secure pension benefits for her surviving partner.
Cynthia Wade's documentary short was adapted into a screenplay by Ron Nyswaner, who also wrote the Oscar-winning film Philadelphia. He has also written an adaptation of Hamlet for director Catherine Hardwicke, which is currently in production.
The story is based on New Jersey mechanic Stacie Andree, who will be played by Page, and her detective girlfriend, Laurel Hester, who was diagnosed with a terminal illness. The couple battled to assure that Andree would receive benefits after Hester's death.
