New Homophobic Harlem Church Sign: Jesus 'Brim-stoned' Gays

The ATLAH World Missionary Church in New York City’s Harlem neighborhood, notorious for homophobic messages on its signage and from Pastor James David Manning’s pulpit, has a new and unbiblical hate statement on its marquee.

“When the homos bullied the poor and needy in Sodom like they do in Harlem, Jesus fire and brim-stoned them,” reads the sign, photos of which have been posted by The New Civil Rights Movement, JoeMyGod, and Real Stories Gallery on Twitter.

Of course, according to the Bible, Jesus hadn’t yet been born at the time God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, which is recounted in the Old Testament. Also, many modern scholars have interpreted the Sodom and Gomorrah story as being about inhospitality and rape, not consensual gay sex.

The church is the same one that earlier this year posted a sign reading “Jesus would stone homos,” which led some LGBT protesters to show up there and challenge Pastor Manning to stone them. Then this summer, it put up the message that “All churches and members that support homes cursed be thou with cancer HIV syphilis stroke madness itch then hell.” These, like the most recent message, were accompanied by chapter-and-verse citations from the Bible, implying that they are quotes from those passages, which they are not.

Among Manning’s outrageous statements, as previously reported, are that President Obama has unleashed “homo demons,” that gay white men “are going to take the black woman’s man,” and that the Roman Catholic Church has “the homosexual spirit.” The New Civil Rights Movement has posted a few more of the minister’s choice comments, such as that NASA’s Voyager space probe proves the “entire universe rebukes sodomy,” that Michael Sam intends to marry a 9-year-old boy, and that both Obama and Russian president Vladimir Putin are gay, with Putin expected to out Obama within 100 days.
