Photographer Courtney Charles deconstructed various stereotypes about gay men and social media in his new series, Ken, and his images feature male models in plastic action figure form.
"With the Ken series, I hope to show that there isn’t just one common ideal of the modern man," Charles previously told OUT. "Regardless of who you are, you can still be the 'plastic-perfect' version of yourself."
Earlier this month, the series debuted in New York City, for which Charles created an interactive exhibition.
"We brought the Ken dolls I’ve created in my images to life using latex and makeup," Charles told PRIDE. "People could pose and take pictures with various Kens in multiple vignettes around the space. We turned the fantasy into a reality."
Charles continued: "The event went so well that we will for sure be doing more popup Ken events in the future. Our event photographer, Made by Roman, commented that in all his years photographing, this was the most fun he’s ever had at an event. My favorite was hearing guests comment that the lack of nipples on the models was strange, but they were surprisingly turned on by it."
