Shonda Rhimes on the Callie and Arizona Bombshell!

Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal showrunner Shonda Rhimes never met a button she couldn’t push, and just as Grey’s amazing lady doc couple Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) began to hit a comfortable stride this season, Rhimes threw a massive road block in the form of a hot cranio-facial specialist played by Hilarie Burton in their way. Now Rhimes has a few things to say about just what went down between beloved Callie and Arizona in the Grey’s season finale, the foremost being that "Callie is not a victim."

SPOILERS if you have not seen the finale.

After working their way back from the season 8 finale plane crash, in which Arizona lost her leg and Callie lost her best friend and father of baby Sofia, the couple was just getting to a comfortable place when Rhimes decided to shake things up with a little infidelity that played out during a Sandy-like superstorm just last week. Essentially, Arizona cheated on her wife Callie with said cranio-facial specialist Lauren in one of the hospital’s notorious on-call rooms. Callie learned of the indiscretion when she realized Arizona and Lauren had accidentally switched scrub tops.

Grey’s aficionados might note that Callie was cheated on before by her husband George (T.R. Knight), but Rhimes insisted that it doesn’t mean Callie is a pushover. "Callie isn't a victim; she's never really been a victim, and she's been cheated on before with George. So how she's going to take this and what she's going to do next is going to be the bigger issue,” Rhimes said at a TV Academy event honoring Scandal, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The dénouement of the finale, after Callie put the scrub top clue together, was a massive argument between the couple in which Arizona revealed she didn’t forgive Callie for not saving her leg.

"Arizona made a move and did some things, and certainly that argument revealed a ton about who she is and how she feels about what's going on," Rhimes said. "How Arizona is going to figure out what she did means it's going to be interesting."

Rhimes remained mum when asked if Burton would return as Lauren for season 10.
