As Kate Middleton has just given birth to a bouncing baby boy Royal, Helen Mirren proves once again that she truly isThe Queen. The 67-year-old legend recently told the Mail on Sunday Event Magazine that if she’d had children – specifically a daughter—she would have taught her to say “fuck off” in the face of sexism.
“If I’d had children and had a girl, the first words I would have taught her would have been “f*** off” because we weren’t brought up ever to say that to anyone, were we?” Mirren told the Mail. “And it’s quite valuable to have the courage and the confidence to say, “No, f*** off, leave me alone, thank you very much.”
The Oscar winner, who’s currently starring in the guilty pleasure action flick Red 2, spoke with the Mail about the difficulties of being a woman in the movie industry in the ‘60s ‘70s and ‘80s.
Mirren’s storied career includes dozens of TV appearances on the BBC including her signature role in Prime Suspect. The Oscar winner for The Queen made a splash on the big screen in cult movies like Caligula andExcalibur before moving on to fare that includes Gosford Park, The Last Station andThe Debt.
Although she’s one of the most revered thespians on the planet, Mirren spoke of some regret for not standing up for herself better in the early days of her career. “You see, I couldn’t help saying “Thank you very much”, I just couldn’t help myself,” she told the Mail.
