Still Waiting for 'The Real L World' to Hit The Spot – Season 2 Premieres Sunday

Viewers seem to love the series, but for the lesbians of Los Angeles who know these women and have developed with them in the lesbian community, it’s just a well-edited, well-directed home video. The Real L Word Season 2 premieres Sunday.

I hoped to write an article about The Real L Word and its power to inspire. I wanted to explain the importance of a reality show that accurately depicts the lives of real lesbians – empowering women all over the country, and possibly the world. I was excited to mention the viewing parties and such that take place because lesbians are that stoked about the season premiere.

But...

Well, that was a bust!

After polling several friends in the Los Angeles lesbian scene, however, I’ve come to find out the consensus on The Real L Word is this: it just isn’t nearly as captivating as the scripted one we fell in love with.

Watching the series is one thing when you’re not from L.A., but for the lesbians of Los Angeles who know these women and have developed with them in the lesbian community, it’s just a well-edited, well-directed home video.

After seeing what the first season of the Real L Word had to offer, I desperately missed Bette getting fired up about something as simple as a sippie cup for Angelica, or seeing The Chart on Alice’s wall. And, as ridiculous as it may sound, I experienced withdrawals from the lack of discussion surrounding Bette and Tina’s relationship. Although The L Wordseries received criticism regarding its inaccurate depiction of the Los Angeles lesbian, I discovered I’d rather live vicariously through fictional characters, than women I see out in the scene on a semi-regular basis.

I’m looking for someone to identify in this second season, and want to actually love the cast despite their individual “flaws.” With a bunch of 20-somethings running a muck in Los Angeles, I'm keeping an open mind.

Sunday after the Real L Word Season 2 premiere, meet me back here on SheWired for a recap and my take on the first episode. Until then, I’ll be waiting for someone – anyone – to restore my faith.
