Is Chucky the Newest Gay Icon?

The possessed doll basically shouted "gay rights" in the new SYFY series, and fans cannot handle it.

Move over Babadook, there's a new queer icon in town – and it's a familiar face to many horror fans.

Last week, the SYFY channel premiered Chucky, a new series produced by the original creator, Don Mancini, and a continuation of the Child’s Play franchise. The story centers Jake, a gay teen bullied by his classmates and family, who stumbles across the Good Guy Doll and takes him home. As we've learned to expect, the murders quickly begin piling up.

The show is bloody, campy fun, but one moment in particular has caught the attention of LGBTQ+ fans. In episode 2, "Give Me Something Good to Eat", Jake attempts to convince Chucky to stop his murdering spree but Chucky flips it around on him, appealing to his outsider status and offering a supportive ear.

"You know, I had a queer kid," says Chucky.

"You have a kid?"

"Genderfluid," he replies, referring to Glen/Glenda of the Seed of Chucky movie.

"And you're cool with it?"

"I'm not a monster, Jake."

The moment has gone viral with memes popping up on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and more. "If a supernaturally possessed murderous doll can say 'gay rights' so can you!" wrote one commenter.

Does this make Chucky a gay icon? We'll just have to see how the rest of this season plays out...

The first two episodes of Chucky are on SYFY's YouTube channel, with new episodes dropping every Tuesday. Watch them below:
