Rumors surrounding the sexuality of indie-pop singer Jason Mraz have been swirling for over a decade. In a 2005 interview with Genre, he professed that he was “bisexually open-minded,” and earlier this year, Mraz closed out a Pride-month poem by telling the LGBTQ community, "I am bi your side."
In Billboard's latest issue, the "I'm Yours" singer is addressing the rumors head-on.
"I’ve had experiences with men," Mraz told Billboard. "Even while I was dating the woman who became my wife. It was like, 'Wow, does that mean I am gay?' And my wife laid it out for me. She calls it "two-spirit," which is what the Native Americans call someone who can love both man and woman. I really like that."
While we're happy for Mraz's epiphany, two-spirit may not be the exact term he's looking for. As INTO points out, "Two-Spirit acknowledges the continuum of gender identity and expression" and is for "gender queer, gender fluid, and gender non-conforming tribal members."
Native Americans and Indigenous peoples also make it clear that "If you don't have a tribe, you can't claim that role."
Maybe Mraz's wife is Native American? Regardless, he might want to consider just sticking with the bisexual label.
Welcome to the family, Jason!
