Last year, Alison Bechdel's award-winning graphic novel memoir Fun Home came to life with instant acclaim Off-Broadway at the Public Theater. The sold-out run, featuring a score by Jeanine Tesori and book/lyrics by Lisa Kron (both Tony nominees), won the New York Drama Critic's Circle Award for Best Musical and the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical, was a finalist for the 2014 Pulitzer Prize closed in January 2014, and was just about everything we wanted in a musical. But never fear if you missed out!
This spring, Fun Home will begin its Broadway run at Circle in the Square Theatre, featuring most of its Off-Broadway stars. Michael Cerveris will return as Bruce Bechdel along with Judy Kuhn as Helen Bechdel, Beth Malone as Alison, Emily Skeggs as Medium Alison, and Sydney Lucas as Small Alison. Joel Perez and Roberta Colindrez will also return as Roy and Joan, with new cast members Zell Morrow and Oscar Williams joining as Alison's brothers. Sam Gold, who directed the show during its Off-Broadway run, will direct the Broadway production as well. If on a scale of 1-10 you are now far too excited for a scale, don't worry, you're not alone. In fact, Fun Home even announced recently it will start previews a week earlier than planned (Broadway is just too ready for this), and as of today, you can officially purchase tickets to the show that is guaranteed to make your 2015 just that much more special and awesome.
For those of you who have no idea what Fun Home is, here's its official description: "When her father dies unexpectedly, graphic novelist Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood playing at the family’s Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father's hidden desires."
You can also purchase the soundtrack here to get yourself as amped as possible for the Fun Home experience. Now prepare to listen to it over and over again until March 27.
