Episcopal Church Names Mary Glasspool its First Openly Lesbian Bishop

The Rev. Canon Mary Glasspool, 56, was ordained to Bishop status on Saturday, making her the first lesbian consecrated to that status. The move also makes Glasspool one of the first two female bishops in the 114-year history of the LA branch of the church.  The Rev. Canon Diane M. Jardine Bruce was also ordained on Saturday.

The Rev. Canon Mary Glasspool, 56, was ordained to Bishop status on Saturday, making her the first lesbian consecrated to that status, the Associated Press is reporting.

The move also makes Glasspool one of the first two female bishops in the 114-year history of the LA branch of the church.  The Rev. Canon Diane M. Jardine Bruce was also ordained on Saturday.

The ceremony took place in Long Beach in front of 3,000 people.  Most were supportive but there were a few opponents of the move.

Just as the ceremony got underway, a man began to yell as he held a sign that read, "Do not be deceived, homosexuals will not inherit the kingdom of God.' Security promptly escorted him out, according to reports.

The church's decision to ordain Glasspool reaffirms its support of same-sex relationships, as well as its continued acceptance of members of the LGBT community.  The church generated worldwide headlines in 2003 by consecrating the first openly gay bishop, V. Gene Robinson of New Hampshire.
