Vicci Martinez and Niki Dawson, possibly the strongest singers on Cee Lo Green’s team, went head-to-head Tuesday evening on NBC’s The Voice for the chance to stay one more week.
If you have no idea what the premise of the show is, here we go: The Voice held auditions, and each coach picked 8 team members based solely on the individual’s voice. Last night was the first round of head-to-head battles where two individuals perform the same song as a duet. Based on their performance, their coach chooses who goes home and who gets to stay for the live performances. Once the live performances begin, America will have the chance to vote and decide who “The Voice” is. Make sense?
Singing their rendition of Pink’s “Perfect,” Martinez and Dawson made you wish this competition were based on finding the perfect pair. Epic vocal range, great stage presence and the genuine emotion expressed through their performance made for an exceptional show.
It also made for an incredibly difficult decision for their mentor Cee Lo. “There’s this gut-wrenching affect you have on me,” he said. “It’s bothering the hell out of me, but I think… I’ve got to… I’ve… I – I pick Vicci.”
As soon as she knew she was moving on, Martinez didn’t let out a sigh of relief; rather, she began to breathe again.
Although Dawson’s range is amazing, and her tone soulful, every word from Martinez’s mouth was dripping with sentiment. What started out as baby crush on a cute little lezzie with a sexy, powerful voice has developed into a genuine respect for her and her war dance. March on and make me us proud, Vicci!
