5 Things I Learned From Dating Older Women

It’s been nearly two years now, and I’m still in a very happy, healthy relationship with my 30 year old girlfriend, who is five years my senior. Before I was with her, my previous girlfriend was 3.5 years older than me. I’ve non-seriously dated other women who have also happened to be older than me.

proud

It’s never been a conscious decision on my part, but it’s always proved to be an illuminating experience. Obviously in the relationship sense, but also in that I’ve learned a lot about myself.

1. I’m a woman—and I should refer to myself as one.

proud

No more calling myself or the women I date "girls."

2. There is more confidence within me than I had realized.

proud

A sentiment that’s easier to realize when you're with someone who’s older and more comfortable with themselves.

3. I can be happy living within a routine and set schedule.

proud

Something I had always seen with a bit of contention has proven to be a really great way to live my life, and I’ve seen that I can be happy this way.

4. Procrastinating isn’t attractive—especially if it’s something you do with chores.

proud

I’ve learned that my immature habits like not making my bed, washing my dishes after I eat or leaving my laundry for days makes me look really bad (and young) to my love interests.

5. I can (and should) think bigger when it comes to my life journey.

proud

Dating older women has made me realize that I can travel to exotic places, make big financial decisions and start passion projects, and not just dream about doing it.
