The extremely popular Star Trek media franchise is known for being quite progressive, exploring a wide range of political and social topics throughout its many different series and titles. While diversity and inclusion are often the most talked-about topics, Star Trek also has a history of portraying characters dealing with different mental health conditions, specifically PTSD.

Back in the not-so-distant, early days of Hollywood, queer coding was a way for filmmakers to signal to an audience that a character was queer without having to explicitly say it. But why was queer coding almost exclusively used for villainous characters, like that of some of our fave Disney bad guys?
