Police in Vacaville, California are investigating after four girls and one boy lured a 15-year-old out lesbian away from school on May 18, and cut off her ponytail in what authorities say could be a hate crime.

The scissors were held so close to the victim’s head that she was left with a bald spot, which took her hair stylist over two hours to repair.

All of the students attend Will C. Wood High School in the Northern California town, near Sacramento.

The school filed a police report on behalf of the victim, which is not being named due to her age and the nature of the crime.

Her mother spoke with the local new affiliate News 10 about the attack and how her daughter, who came out as a lesbian earlier this year, was deeply traumatized by the incident.  The mother spoke with the news station anonymously, and is now pushing local authorities to investigate the vicious attack as an anti-gay hate crime.
