As if we needed another reason to love Amy Schumer, because of her and her daring producers' recent efforts, you can now say the word "pussy" on Comedy Central without getting bleeped out. Schumer had been complaining for sometime about the gender inequality in the network--anyone who has watched more than five minutes of South Park can attest to the fact that "dick" is used prolifically but somehow, crass references to female anatomy are considered censor-worthy vulgarity.
All that changed when her producer Dan Powell penned a letter to the network calling it out on this glaring disparity and demanding change. Thanks to their collected efforts, the network acquiesed and now anyone who is so inclined can drop the powerful p-word with abandon.
Regardless of how you feel about swearing, this is a breakthrough that all women should give a shit about (see what I did there?). For so many years, so much of humor has been deemed acceptable only when used by men (women telling period or bathroom or masturbation jokes are able to make an entire audience collectively shuffle around in their chairs and look at each other warily), but luckily Chelsea Handler and her various apostles are changing the game and confronting people about their discomfort when it comes to women being real humans with bodily functions and slang words for their parts and sex drives and embarassing stories of all stripes. Words are what we use to label and control, to define and signify, to take and distribute power and influence, so when we put "pussy" on a pedestal, it's saying something far more important than simply what it means. Plus, it's fucking funny! I, for one, am thrilled that Handler is telling food poisoning horror stories because what woman hasn't been there before?
