Scottish singer Horse McDonald, whom we recently featured in an interview, married her fiancée Alanna Friday in a civil partnership in her hometown of Lanark, a place she fled s a teen due to antigay bullying, according to The Daily Record.
“I had a terrible time growing up. People attacked and bullied me because I was gay in a small town,” Horse told the Daily Record. “I used to get chased by gangs. I had physical encounters. I was attacked by people with broken bottles but the verbal abuse was the worst.”
The 54-year-old, who released her first album The Same Sky in 1990, was tight-lipped about her nuptials, keeping the happy occasion a secret except for to close family and friends.
Horse also told the Record that she feared for her safety as a teen. “I had a terrible time growing up. People attacked and bullied me because I was gay in a small town.”
The abuse was so pervasive that even the police were in on the bullying, which was part of the catalyst for her departure from her native town. “It got so bad that one day I was walking and a police patrol car was sitting across the street,” Horse said. “The policeman shouted, ‘There’s that lezzie." I thought, ‘I’m in trouble now. If something happens, who is going to help me?’ I left the town shortly after that.”
But Horse’s marrying her partner in the hometown is a good indication that attitudes have changed, she told the Record.
Horse, an accomplished singer/songwriter has opened for icons including B.B. King and Tina Turner and she’s got a new album, Home, and a UK tour slated for this year.
