The Golden Globes: The Good, the Bad and the Downright Awkward
It's just about that time, folks. The Annual Golden Globe Awards are almost upon us.
The Globes are a special place. A strange hybrid of the Emmys and the Oscars, The Globes are always entertaining and interesting. Sometimes that's good, and sometimes that's not.
Basically, there are definite pros and cons:
PRO: It's the only prestigious award show to honor actors in both TV and film.
CON: Featuring TV and film alike means a lot of awards, which can get tedious after a while.
PRO: Alcohol. This is the only award show where your favorite celebs are free to get as plastered as they would like to, which leads to hilarious impromptu moments.
CON: Alcohol. Things can also go the opposite direction; instead of fun and hilarious, it can get awkward and uncomfortable real quick.
PRO: Globes hosts have a history of refusing to hold back when it comes to their jokes.
CON: Inevitably, sometimes the jokes go too far. Instead of a laugh, you're faced with an audience-wide gasp or, even worse, total silence.
PRO: The fashion.
CON: Sometimes the red carpet fashion coverage goes too far.
Case and point: The Mani Cam. Why?
PRO: Meaningful acceptance speeches.
CON: Rambling acceptance speeches that make you wonder if the person even knows what they're saying or where they are.
PRO: The Globes results often predict later Oscar winners.
CON: The weirdly long and specific category names.
PRO: The adorable candid footage of celebs during commercial breaks makes it look like all your favorites are bff's with each other.
CON: Sometimes said adorable footage is a little too candid, and a stray head or torso comes into frame.
PRO: The obviously-staged jokes between the hosts and the celebrities in the audience make for some grade A television.
CON: When they pair up two seemingly random actors to present an award who have no chemistry, so they just read the teleprompter in awkward monotone.
PRO/CON: There's no rules.
The Golden Globe Awards air Sunday, January 10 on NBC. Be sure to tune in to see the nonsense.
If nothing else, watch just to see if Amy Poehler shows up to once again use her power and charm to be the luckiest person in the world for 5 seconds:
