13 Tweets for Women's Equality Day Because Talking About Equality Matters

From Barack Obama to Waitress the musical, Twitter is blowing up with people demanding equality for women.

It seems unthinkable that in 2016 a Women’s Equality Day is even necessary, but since Rep. Bella Abzug (D-NY) designated Aug. 26 Women’s Equality Day in 1971, the Equal Rights Amendment still hasn’t passed and women still seek equal pay for equal work.

Women’s Equality Day was created to commemorate the passage of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote, and while we’ve come a long way since 1971, with this year marking the history-making event that is Hillary Clinton becoming the first Presidential nominee of a major party, there are more cracks that need to be put in the glass ceiling.

One way to call attention to the lack of equality for women is to call it out, and that’s just what thousands are doing on Twitter under the #WomensEqualityDay hashtag. Below is what some of our faves have Tweeted in honor of the day, but first, enjoy this wonderful women’s equality timeline from the National Women’s History Project.
