Candace Cameron Bure’s decision to publicly draw a line between “traditional marriage” and LGBTQ+ inclusion is continuing to have ramifications.

Actor Danny Pintauro was recently asked about her comments on an episode of the Behind the Velvet Rope podcast, and used the opportunity to share a “horrifying” interaction he had when she interviewed him on The View in 2015.

Pintauro had been brought on the show to discuss the dangers of abusing crystal meth during sex — he contracted HIV from a sexual partner while he was on the drug in the early 2000s. It was something he had been open about, and had made it his mission to help educate the gay community on taking precautions and living a healthy lifestyle.

But Bure made things awkward, and it sounds like her underlying homophobia was to blame.

“I was disappointed in the way she treated me when I was on The View,” he admitted. “[She treated me] poorly. She basically said, ‘Do you take responsibility for getting HIV because you were living a promiscuous lifestyle?’ And turned on the spot to my husband and said, ‘Do you have unprotected sex with your husband?’”

The former Who’s the Boss? star called the experience both “horrifying” and “one of the lowest moments” of his post-coming out journey. He also said that having that interaction with Bure meant he wasn’t at all surprised when she publicly declared her new network would be focusing on movies with “traditional marriage at the core” when asked if there were any plans to include LGBTQ+ characters in the future.

“She must have tons of people in her life that are LGBTQ+, at least from her past. And how she got to this place is just a little concerning to me,” Pintauro admitted. “It’s almost like she went backwards in a way. I don’t know if that’s her brother or her family. I don’t know where any of that stems from, but it’s definitely disappointing.”

Who did Danny Pintauro play on Who's the Boss?

Pintauro played Jonathan Bower on Who's the Boss? from 1984-1992.

What else is Danny Pintauro known for?

Pintauro's first role was in an adaptation of the Stephen King novel Cujo.
