The Trailer for HBO Max’s Velma Is Here – And Pretty Queer!
Mindy Kaling's spin on the beloved cartoon is a fresh take on a classic!
Mindy Kaling's new Scooby-Doo prequel series is almost here, and the trailer for Velma is teasing the queer mystery of our animated dreams.
The series is described as "an adult animated comedy series telling the origin story of Velma Dinkley, the unsung and under-appreciated brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang. This original and humorous spin unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers."
The trailer features quirky teenage chaos and a spin on all of our beloved characters – except Scooby notably. Daphne is a cool, mean girl, Fred is a douchebag, and Shaggy (who goes by Norville) is anti-drug. We even see a bit of Velma's sexual identity crisis after she has some heart eyes for Daphne near the school locker. "In this day and age, you can't speculate about someone's sexuality," she says. "Unless they're famous or Peppermint Patty."
But this is not quite like the lesbian Velma of the last Scooby-Doo movie, Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! According to Out, Velma is bisexual in this new series and has a crush on both Daphne and Fred. How will this love triangle play out? Guess we'll have to wait and see.
Kaling, who is executive producing the series, voices Velma, Constance Wu plays Daphne, Sam Richardson is Norville, Glen Howerton is Fred, and Jane Lynch and Wanda Sykes are Daphne’s lesbian moms.
Velma will premiere January 12 on HBO Max. Watch the official trailer below:

In this HBO Max series, Velma is of Indian descent and voiced by Mindy Kaling.
The team behind the new series reportedly thought the talking dog is geared toward kids and the creators weren't comfortable using the character in a show with real murderers.
Velma premieres January 12 on HBO Max.
