We knew, but now we know.

Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated co-creator Tony Cervone just confirmed that Velma was canonically intended to be a lesbian and fans are feeling SO VINDICATED.

Cervone commented on Instagram recently that “Velma in Mystery Incorporated is not bi. She’s gay.”

“We always planned on Velma acting a little off and out of character while she was dating Shaggy because that relationship was wrong for her and she had unspoken difficulty with the why,” he wrote. “I don’t think Marcie and Velma had time to act on their feelings during the main timeline, but post-reset, they are a couple.”

“You can not like it, but this was our intention,” he added.

Mystery Incorporated ran from 2010 to 2013, and is certainly only one entry into the vast Scooby-Doo canon, but Velma has always been a queer icon, especially for smart, nerdy girls, and fans are absolutely ready to consider this applicable to every iteration of the character.

And James Gunn, who wrote two live action Scooby-Doo movies starring Linda Cardellini as Velma and Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne, confirmed that he attempted to write Velma as gay but was blocked by the studio.

I mean, none of that is surprising. None.

Why do we keep winning?? (I'm gonna need that deleted Velma/Daphne kiss though, Warner Brothers.)
