6 Reasons Stephenie Meyer Should Write a Queer Version of Twilight
So, if you haven't heard, Twilight author Stephenie Meyer just released Life and Death — a "reimagined" version of her smash-hit Twilight, where (get this) the main characters are gender-swapped. Yes, that's right, vampire Edward is now Edythe and whiny lip-biter Bella is Beau. Yes, this is real life. And no, "Team Edythe" just doesn't have the same ring to it.
So why go to all the work on gender swapping when she could have REALLY mixed things up and given us a same-sex pairing? How about Edward and Bradley? Or Emma and Bella? Here are six reasons we'd love to see Twilight a little more gay.
1. The genre could use some fresh blood *teehee*
Vampires are kind of overdone, but we'd love to see a sparkling gay character that isn't relegated to the dance squad.
2. We need more gay love stories
Even in 2015, there are embarrassingly few same-sex love stories that make it big.
3. Gay characters can be main characters, too
Sure, gay characters have become more visible in lots of media — but they're still very much the sidekicks. LGBT people can lead a story, too, you know.
4. Twilight is already a little gay
Amiright?
5. It would bring slash fiction to the mainstream
Slash fiction has been around since the '70s (and probably even before) but since Life and Death is essentially fan-fiction of her own work, Meyer could have really one-upped herself and wrote a steamy slash fiction version of her mega-bestseller.
6. It could inspire EL James to write a "reimagined" 50 Shades of Gay
Just take it.
