Shawn Mendes (the singer behind that earworm of a song, Stitches) took to Snapchat yesterday to let all his fans know one important thing:
He's not gay.
But is it really that important to make that kind of "clarifying" announcement these days? According to Mendes, it is, because "in this day and age people have the audacity to write online that I'm gay as if it were a bad thing."
Sure, there are people who try to make "being gay" a "bad thing." Unfortantely, the crux of his message is getting lost in the resoundingly negative "I'm not." Couldn't he have said "I'm straight"? Or "it's no one's business but my own"?
Shoulda, woulda, coulda.
It's easy to judge young celebrities, but they have to navigate being young and being in the spotlight. So maybe we'll cut Mr. Mendes a little slack.
