Nobody asked for this!

Build-A-Bear’s getting a little freaky.

The popular brand of kids’ plush toys launched a new option meant for adults, which they’re referring to as “Build-A-Bear After Dark.”

A promo image shared to their Facebook page looks like a still from a furry Live Links commercial, featuring a stuffed lion lounging in a silky red robe next to a single rose and two glasses of what one would assume must be champagne.

“Red Hot Gift Ideas!” reads the text, as if a stuffed creature is the key to getting your significant other all hot and bothered.

Possibly feeling like the image was TOO sexy, whoever wrote the Facebook copy clarified that Build-A-Bear’s “unique gift ideas…are sure to get you hugged,” which seems a lot more likely than a fuzzy little lion leading directly to a voracious sexual appetite.

The name and advertising set off a slew of concerns that we are slipping further and further into dystopia. Why does Build-A-Bear need to get sexy? Aren’t these usually for kids? Don’t we have anything better to do? Do brands understand that pivoting to attract a new audience doesn’t have to be this extreme?

What’s perhaps even stranger is that there don’t actually seem to be any horny bears in the Build-A-Bear catalog. The link provided in the Facebook ad for the “After Dark” line just leads to some stuffed toys in heart pajamas, some holding alcohol, or wearing shirts with slogans like “Rosé Over Roses.” The most egregious bear is probably the one smiling while holding a pitchfork and wearing devil horns, and that’s the kind of “egregious” that would only upset the likes of One Million Moms.”

“These are just cheeky stuffed animals for wine moms,” one Twitter user pointed out.

So it ultimately feels a little bit less dystopian — although the question of why Build-A-Bear wanted to advertise in this manner still remains. Still, this is probably one Valentine’s Day gift you can skip.
