Sentences have been handed down to the four men convicted of the brutal murder of a South African lesbian in 2006.

BBC News reports that Lubabalo Ntlabathi, Sicelo Mase, Luyanda Londzi, and Mbulelo Damba — four of the nine men accused of kicking, stoning, beating, and stabbing to death 19-year-old Zoliswa Nkonyana near her home in Cape Town — will each serve 18 years in prison.

The other five men charged with the crime were acquitted.

The sentences were reportedly met with cheering and dancing from a crowd outside the court in Khayelitsha.

Nkonyana’s family were pleased with the punishments. “They did not accept responsibility for what they did and we are happy that when we asked for a lengthy jail term, the magistrate agreed to that,” the victim’s stepfather told South Africa's Sowetan newspaper.
