U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team and Olympic goalie Hope Solo’s fiancé’, former Seattle Seahawks/Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Jerramy Stevens, 33, was arrested early Monday morning on suspicion of fourth degree domestic assault, after an altercation with Solo, 31, at a party the day before their planned wedding day, Sporting News is reporting. Court records show that Solo received a cut on her elbow during the tussle.
After finding that there was insufficient evidence connecting Stevens to the assault, a Kirkland, Washington Municipal Court judge released Stevens without charging him with a crime. However, the case is still under investigation, with charges possible down the line.
Police in Kirkland, a Seattle suburb, responded to a 911 call that came in around 3:45am, from Solo’s older brother, Marcus, 34. According to court documents, Marcus blamed the disturbance on two or three unknown men at the party.
The initial argument reportedly started after Solo and Stevens began clashing over whether to live in Washington or Florida after their nuptials, which were scheduled to take place on Tuesday.
The couple began dating in August, after Solo returned home from the London Olympics. After dating for two months they reportedly applied for a marriage license last Thursday.
Solo was not terribly cooperative with police when they arrived on scene, according to ABC. She reportedly had blood on her elbow from a cut but refused to tell officers how she was injured. And when officers were questioning Solo’s brother she allegedly yelled, "Don't say anything to them Marcus," several times.
In addition to Solo’s elbow injury, one 32-year-old woman was taken to the hospital for a hip injury, and a man suffered multiple bumps, scrapes and contusions, Lt. Mike Murray said.
According to court records, a police officer found Stevens hiding between the bed and a wall in an upstairs bedroom. Stevens initially told officers he was sleeping on the floor and didn't hear the fight. However, a responding officer noted probable cause in his affidavit and arrested Stevens based on his admission that he argued with Solo. Marcus also had signs of dried blood on his shirt and cheek.
Solo appeared in court on Tuesday but left without answering any questions from the media.
Stevens was drafted by the Seahawks as the No. 28 (first round) pick in the 2002 draft and later went on to play in Tampa Bay. In 2000 he was accused, but was never charged, with a sexual assault, he was charged with driving under the influence in 2007and he was arrested in 2010 for possession of marijuana. The marijuana arrest came the night before a game, eventually leading to his release from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Solo has collected many accolades on the field. She is a two time Olympic gold medal winner (2008, 2012), was named the WPS Goalkeeper of the year in 2009, and was the winner of a FIFA Women’s World Cup Golden Glove and Bronze Ball in 2011. She was also named to the FIFA World Cup All-Star Team after her performance in the tournament in 2011.
She recently made headlines as a contestant during season 13 of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, for posing nude for ESPN’s The Body Issue, and for publishing her best-selling autobiography Solo: A Memoir of Hope.
Negative press has also plagued the goalie. In her memoir she made a bombshell claim that DWTSpartner, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, was physically aggressive and nasty during their training for the show. "He was often nasty," she wrote, "swearing at me and being harshly critical. I didn't like being treated like that, but I could take it. He manhandled me in rehearsals from the start, pushing me, whacking my stomach, bending my arms roughly.” Chmerkovskiy responded with a tweet, “Always hated hypocrites and liars, but when someone is both and an opportunist, I just feel bad for them.”
She also made waves when she accused Greg Ryan, a former coach of the U.S. women's soccer team, of pushing her in a hotel room in 2007. The incident allegedly happened after Solo was benched in favor of keeper Briana Scurry, during a 2007 World Cup game in Brazil. Ryan adamantly denies that he shoved Solo.
Lastly, prior to the start of the London games, she was issued a warning by theU.S. Anti-Doping Agency(USADA) after a urine test detected the banned substance Canrenone. Solo said in a statement she had been prescribed a pre-menstrual medication and was not aware it contained any banned substances. She was cleared of charges after her story checked out.
