These Trans Men Discuss Male Privilege & What It Means to Them

Is male privilege a problem for men? These guys have a lot to say about that.

True

Privilege of any kind is often a tricky subject to talk about. The simple fact is that those benefiting from privilege often never need to think of why or how they have it. That's why this video about male privilege is special. Laci Green of MTV's Braless brought in trans guys to talk about a privilege they may not have always experienced. Cis passing trans men who pass now, and didn't before, know what it's like to be without the male privilege they so happily enjoy. This amount of insight makes for a truly loving and understanding conversation about male privilege.

In the video, the guys first explain what male privilege means to them,  pointing out the various ways women and femmes have to deal with unsolicited comments, interactions, and harassment from men.

"While I was walking I realized I had no worry in the world," one guy expressed while talking about a night he spent with his femme friends.

The men also talk about how much easier it is for men to be respected by others, no matter what or how they say things:

"I've always been the type to express myself and talk real crazy, and when I did it prior to transitioning, it wasn't okay. But the minute I transitioned and everybody saw me as that male figure, it was like, ‘Ah man, that’s hilarious!'"

On a funnier note, like one of the guys (Tiq Milan of GLAAD) mentioned, it is a bit ridiculous that women and femmes can talk about male privilege all day and not get the same attention. Baby steps though, right?
