SPOILERS (if you have not watched the most recent episode– and maybe even if you have!)
We all saw it coming; we all thought it might happen; but when Arizona cheated on wife Callie on Thursday night’s Grey’s Anatomy, we can’t say we weren’t heartbroken. According to a TV Guide interview with Jessica Capshaw, who portrays the (generally) lovable Arizona, the actress was just as surprised as we were. “It was one of those moments where I was completely shocked,” she says. “Completely, completely totally blown away.”
While it’s certainly clear why Arizona would be attracted to the beautiful Dr. Lauren Boswell (played by Hillarie Burton), viewers may question why Arizona, the faithful and loving mother, would cheat on her wife. Capshaw told TV Guide that she believes the loss of her leg and aftermath of the traumatic plane crash might have made Arizona more vulnerable to sexual attention. “I don't think that Arizona wanted to do anything wrong,” Capshaw explained. “It was a crime of passion. If she had been thinking, she would never have done anything. She had a moment where she didn't and that was the only way I could play it.”
Thursday night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy left one thought on the minds of Calzona fans: what’s next? TV Guide asked what a conversation with Callie about Arizona’s infidelity would look like and Capshaw replied, “It's devastating. This is what the viewers are going to really probably feel the most.” She then rand down the laundry list of everything Callie and Arizona have survived including a car crash and a plane crash, adding that the uncertainty is what makes “Grey’s Anatomy, Grey’s Anatomy.”
Capshaw shares fans’ concerns over what will be Callie’s struggle to forgive Arizona. “I don't know how you come back from this. It depends on how characters rebound from certain things: whether or not you can ever truly come back from infidelity, whether or not that trust is broken, whether or not you can reclaim it," she said.
