The couple's attorney confirmed that The Reader star and American Beauty director split earlier this year.
Kate and Sam are saddened to announce that they separated earlier this year," attorney Keith Schilling said in a statement to Access Hollywood. "The split is entirely amicable and is by mutual agreement. Both parties are fully committed to the future joint parenting of their children. They ask that the media respect the privacy of the family."
The couple began dating in 2001 and married in 2003. They have a son together, six-year-old Joe, and Winslet has a nine-year-old daughter, Mia, from her previous marriage to Jim Treapleton.
Winslet and Mendes collaborated on 2008's Revolutionary Road, re-teaming her with Titanic costar Leonardo DiCaprio in the film based on Richard Yates' novel of fifties-era suburban marriage ennui.
While Winslet has signed on for Todd Haynes' HBO miniseries of the melodramatic noir classic Mildred Pierce, Mendes is currently working on the next James Bond flick starring Daniel Craig.
