WATCH: Don't Be Such a Lesbian Tackles Stereotypes About Gay Women
British filmmaker and presenter Jana Dowling investigates stereotypes about lesbians in her short film Don’t Be Such a Lesbian. “When I was young I thought the worse thing you could be was a lesbian. At school we through the word around as an insult without giving it much thought. I even used to pray not to be gay,” Dowling says in voiceover at the start of the film. She goes on to say that she came out two years ago after having been married to a man. She admits that her resistance to coming out was directly tied to misconceptions about lesbians that had been ingrained in her since youth.
In the film Dowling investigates and debunks current stereotypes with on-the-street interviews juxtaposed with what actual lesbians discussing perceptions. Watch it in full below.
