Minnesota state representative Steve Simon, who voted against the proposed constitutional amendment to ban marriage equality, met religious critics on their own turf by saying their sheer numbers make it obvious that God wants them in the world.

Gawkerreports that Simon, a Democrat from the Twin Cities area, spoke Monday against the proposed amendment, which later passed a Republican-controlled panel in the house. The proposal appears headed for the 2012 ballot in Minnesota.

Simon tackled the question of whether people are born with their sexual orientation. Many opponents of marriage equality have buffeted their arguments with the belief that gay people can be “changed.”

"How many more gay people does God have to create before we ask ourselves whether or not God actually wants them around?" he asked.
