The cut scene of SMG and Linda Cardellini making out as Daphne and Velma is what we deserve.

With James Gunn rising to the head of DC Studios and last year’s Scooby-Doo movie making Velma canonically a lesbian, Gunn’s 2002 Scooby-Doo has more frequently been getting the attention it deserves.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played Daphne in both it and the sequel, recently discussed the film with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live — and if there was more to the relationship between Daphne and Velma, played by Linda Cardellini.

“I don’t know about a relationship on the side,” Gellar told the fan who broached the topic. “But there was a steamy— I mean, I said it was steamy, but they probably didn’t think it was, hence it was cut.”

For as much as people loved the film, one of the more fascinating aspects has always been the idea of all the things that were cut out. Gunn himself has previously spoken about how the initial cut of the movie was rated R, and one of those lost scenes involving a kiss between Daphne and Velma has been confirmed repeatedly over the years.

The kiss seemed to be news to Cohen, who reacted with surprise, prompting Gellar to continue.

“There was an actual kiss between Daphne and Velma, got cut,” she said. “I feel like the world wants to see it, but I don’t know where it is.”

Obviously, yes, the world very much wants to see it, along with the whole original R-rated cut of the movie.

In the meantime, we’ll make do with Cardellini playing queer on TV and SMG continuing to be a gay icon for the ages.

But Gunn’s positioning within Warner Bros. Discovery now seems like the best time to try to dig up those lost Scooby-Doo scenes and give fans what they’ve clamored for all these years at last — or at very least hit us with a much, much gayer sequel starring the same cast.
