It was big, big news in the sports world yesterday when Washington Wizards’ center Jason Collins came out to become the first openly gay male in major league sports.

His historic coming out lit up Twitter to the point of nearly crashing it. He received congratulations from celebrities across the board including Bill Clinton and from President Barack Obama.

Ellen DeGeneres also sent out warm congratulations to Jason Collins on her show, praising him for his courage.

“Because of you there’s a little boy playing basketball right now who knows that he can be who he is and play the sport that he loves,” Ellen said, sandwiched between a series of tall jokes.
