Why You Should Watch the Season Finale of 'Last Tango in Halifax'

If you haven’t been following the story of Caroline and Kate, a key subplot in the PBS series Last Tango in Halifax, there’s still time to come aboard. The final episode of the first season airs tonight in many markets (check local listings), the whole season is available on DVD (and you can watch full episodes online). A second season is in the works.

The charming, witty British comedy-drama follows the late-in-life love affair of Alan (the great gay actor Derek Jacobi) and Celia (Anne Reid), reunited nearly six decades after their teenage romance. Both had been married to other people and widowed, and both have daughters with complicated lives.

Of most interest to SheWired readers, though, is the romance of Celia’s daughter, Caroline (Sarah Lancashire), a school administrator, and her colleague Kate (Nina Sosanya). Kate believes she’s the right person for Caroline, but there are some barriers to overcome. Caroline has an estranged, unfaithful husband, who blew up over the revelation of Caroline’s lesbian relationship in episode 5. He also asked his lover, Judith, “What do they do? They haven’t got anything to do anything with, have they?” But Caroline finds ready acceptance of her new love from son William.

The show is eminently well-written and well-acted, and Lancashire and Sosanya generate plenty of heat together. We can hardly wait for the second season! Find out more about the series on the PBS website.
